From Realtor by Day to Trainer by Early Morning — Here's How to Build a Budget-Friendly Home Gym That Works

Hi friends,

As someone who begins each day with a workout, I know firsthand how valuable it is to have a

designated space at home that supports your well-being — physically and mentally.

But here’s the good news: you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars or dedicate an entire room to build a home gym that’s effective and motivating. Whether you're squeezing in workouts between Zoom calls or trying to keep up with your fitness goals without heading to a gym, I’ve got you covered.

🛠️ Build Your Home Gym for Under $300

You don’t need a Peloton to break a sweat. Here’s what I recommend to get the most bang for your buck:

🧱 Step 1: Choose a Functional Space

  • A corner of your basement, spare bedroom, or even a section of the garage or living room can work.

  • Add a mirror (optional) to check form — many big box stores carry affordable ones for under $20.

🧰 Step 2: Stock the Essentials

Here’s a great setup that works for almost any workout style. Pro tip:  check your local marketplace and Facebook groups. So many people purchase equipment with the best of intentions, and end up trying to unload it when they lose motivation. Lots of opportunities to purchase fitness essentials second-hand!

✅ Set of Dumbbells (2–3 pairs) – $60–$100 Start with light, medium, and heavy based on your fitness level. Look for adjustable sets if space is tight.

✅ Resistance Bands (long and loop) – $15–$30 Incredible for strength training, mobility, and stretching. I even take my loop bands in my suitcase when I travel. Here is a great, affordable option.

✅ Step Bench – $20–$40 Doubles as a bench or cardio platform. If you can’t find gently used, here is an affordable option.

✅ Yoga Mat or Cushioned Floor Mat – $15–$30 Essential for joint comfort, core work, or cool-downs.

✅ Optional, but nice to have:  Foam Roller or Massage Ball – $10–$20 Keep your recovery game strong — your muscles will thank you.

✅ Optional, but nice to have: Kettlebell (10–20 lbs) – $25–$40 Great for swings, squats, presses, and dynamic movements.

🧠 Step 3: Structure Your Space

  • Use a simple storage bin, rack, or basket to keep things tidy.

  • Hang a dry erase board or keep a notebook nearby to track your workouts.

  • If you’re motivated by visuals, print a few favorite routines or goal reminders.

❤️ From My Home to Yours

I’ve slowly accumulated and updated my equipment for my home gym over the years. Two decades later, I still believe consistency and commitment matter more than the fanciest equipment.

If you’re setting up a home gym — or dreaming of a new home that has the perfect space for one — I’d love to help.

In both real estate and fitness, small, intentional steps add up to real progress. Let me know if you have questions, want custom workout ideas, or need help finding a home with a great basement ready for your own home gym.

Here’s to feeling strong — in your body and your space.
